How to care for composite bonding

Composite bonding is a durable and effective cosmetic treatment when it is looked after well. Understanding the simple steps that protect bonded resin can significantly extend how long it lasts and how well it looks over time.

Avoid biting hard objects directly with bonded teeth
Composite resin is strong but can chip under concentrated force. Avoid biting nails, pens, ice, hard sweets or crusty bread with the bonded teeth specifically. If you habitually grind or clench your teeth, mention this at your consultation — a night guard may be recommended.

Manage staining foods and drinks
Composite is more susceptible to staining than porcelain. Tea, coffee, red wine, turmeric, and tobacco can all cause discolouration over time. This does not mean avoiding them entirely, but rinsing with water afterwards and maintaining good oral hygiene helps slow the process.

Maintain excellent oral hygiene
Composite can accumulate plaque and tartar just like natural teeth. Brush twice daily with a non-abrasive toothpaste (standard fluoride toothpaste is fine — avoid whitening pastes which can be abrasive), floss daily and use interdental brushes around any bonding that sits close to the gumline.

Attend regular hygiene appointments
Professional cleaning and polishing at regular hygiene appointments removes surface staining and helps restore the polish of the composite. This is particularly valuable for bonding on visible front teeth.

What to do if bonding chips
Composite bonding can generally be repaired fairly easily — usually in a single appointment. If you notice a chip, rough edge or colour change, contact us so we can assess and advise. Do not leave sharp or rough edges without seeking advice.
